Tesla has made a real move toward its autonomous promised land, offering commercial rides in its custom-built Cybercab in some parts of Austin. The two-seater, or it can be called soon as the long-promised robotaxi, now can be booked through the Robotaxi app on Tesla’s website, having been operating similar Model Y on the streets of the Texas state capital and other cities. The roll out came after an additional invite-only event this week where customers and influencers were able to get a glimpse of the gold #CYBERTRUCK and the new butterfly doors.
Customers can now use the vehicle service in the appointed zones whenever an Cab is present. If you are one of the first to try the new service one might notice that the interior is silent and spacey and caters to the customer preferring a fun, singular experience with nothing more than a massive touchscreen that offers movies and a start/stop menu. What differentiates the Cybercab is an entire redesign around autonomy rather than human piloting.
Absent any human controls, the vehicle works with Tesla’s vision system (camera-based) and Full Self-Driving software to pilot in city conditions. The firm claims that its wider unsupervised robotaxi fleet has accumulated sufficient mileage before deploying its new purpose-built robotaxi for paid service. For now, the fleet is relatively small, with around four dozen Cybercabs registered within Texas, meaning riders might tend to see a Model Y more often given market conditions. Austin has now become the test bed for this growing fleet. Tesla has an existing presence in the city with its wider robotaxi venture, and the Cybercab is the first to run robotaxi service with a vehicle to be exact designed for this purpose.
Dynamicpricing is employed, price fluctuating with demand to offer a premium experience at a lower price point. Initial reports of trips indicate relatively short urban rides for just a few dollars, comparable to other established ride-hailing services. The regulators have taken notice of this development.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has said that it is evaluating Tesla’s proposal to certify a vehicle that doesn’t need the traditional controls required under current federal safety regulations. Other companies’ in the same way purpose-built driverless vehicles have taken years to gain exemption, and the agency’s inquiry emphasizes the steady progression from trial to commercial execution of driverless cars.
As a passenger, it truly is a different experience to current taxis or even supervised robotaxis: opened through the app, no driving controls in the cabin and no human driver. Some safety features are in place though like a physical stop button on the console and mechanical door opener for emergencies. No young children yet in the Cybercab.
In effect, this would be more than just an Austin launchit would be more of an experiment testing the existing nuts and bolts of what it takes to run a robotaxi network using vehicles with no drivers as a fundamental feature. Tesla is testing the waters for services and infrastructure purchases from existing companies with expensive fleets that could act as the core of Tesla’s bot fleet.
